Identity of cliffs body still unknown
The grim discovery was one of three made in as many weeks off the Clare coast. The identities of the first and third bodies have been established, however, the identity of a corpse discovered on July 30 remains a mystery.
The body, known to be that of a male, possibly in his 40s, was spotted in the sea at the Cliffs of Moher by an American couple who had been visiting the area. Gardaí have had no reports of any persons missing in the area and have been in contact with colleagues across the country as well as the international police agency Interpol in an effort to identify the man.
A week earlier, on July 24, the body of a man was discovered in the sea at Kilkee two days after his rental car was found abandoned near the Cliffs of Moher 40km to the north. The body was later confirmed to be that of well-known German musician Christian Glinz. Mr Glinz would have celebrated his 44th birthday last week.
While it is understood that Mr Glinz’s mother travelled to Ireland last week, his body remains in the morgue at the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick. It is understood that arrangements are still being made to repatriate the body to Berlin.
Gardaí had been working on the theory that the two discoveries may have been connected; however, while they have not ruled out the possibility, they say that from inquiries, it now looks increasingly unlikely.
Meanwhile, on August 7, the body of another man was discovered at the base of the Cliffs of Moher. The corpse was reported by an American couple who had been taking photographs close to O’Brien’s Tower. The body was recovered by Doolin Coast Guard and later confirmed to be that of a 37-year-old Polish man for whom a search had been mounted.
