Opera House chief of 20 years retires
The announcement was made in a joint statement issued by Mr Barnes and the board of the Opera House.
Mr Barnes thanked all those with whom he has worked over the last two decades.
“I would like to thank all those with whom I worked so closely, my terrific management team and staff,” he said.
“I would also like to thank the many members of the board, past and present, who have given their time so tirelessly to the success of the Opera House.”
Board chairman Damian Wallace said the board would like to recognise Mr Barnes’ “exemplary service” to the Opera House over the last 20 years and his outstanding contribution to the artistic culture of Cork.
“Gerry has been an integral part of the transformation of the Opera House in recent times and he has made an immense contribution to the Opera House and its place as a very attractive and integral part of Cork’s character and vibrancy,” he said.
“On behalf of a grateful board, our staff and patrons, I would like to wish Gerry every possible success in his future artistic endeavours.”
The Opera House said it expects to be able to finalise discussions on the appointment of an interim chief executive officer within the coming days.
However, an announcement on the appointment is expected today.
Cork Opera, which was completed in 1965 to replace the old Cork Opera House destroyed by fire in 1955, has undergone a major investment in recent years.
Mr Barnes oversaw improvements to acoustics and lighting, a new air handling system was installed and crucial repairs were carried out to the roof in 2008.
The second phase, which was completed last May, saw the installation of 960 new seats. The refurbished theatre was officially opened by President Mary McAleese last June.
Last month, Cork City Council went guarantor for a €1.5 million loan which is being sought by the Opera House.
The theatre will also be required to seek the approval of the city council, which owns 39% of shares in the venue, for any borrowing, including overdraft accumulation, over €300,000.
