Two UL projects receive funding

TWO research programmes at the University of Limerick (UL) have received substantial funding from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), it was announced yesterday.

One of the projects, led by Professor Andrew Fowler from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, is for the investigation of the growth of thin layers of bacteria which grow on solid surfaces and which can have both harmful and beneficial effects.

His research will develop sophisticated mathematical models which will be used in conjunction with laboratory experiments and field data to assist industry and improve the environment.

The research, meanwhile, being undertaken by Dr Michael Connolly, Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, is in the area of optical fibre network technologies.

A UL spokesperson said: “This constantly developing research area has led to the phenomenal growth in information and communications technology.

“Dr Connolly is working with photonic devices to carry out ultra-fast optical signal processing functions where data carrying light signals are manipulated without any direct electronics.

“His research work spans fundamental physics, mathematical modelling and laboratory testing and is being carried out in conjunction with the Tyndall National Institute and Dublin City University.”

UL vice president, Prof Brian Fitzgerald, said that much needed funding will enable these research projects to proceed and develop practical applications which will benefit a wide range of industries.

He said: “We look forward to enhancing the advanced research programmes at UL to allow for fourth level initiatives that will help Ireland play its part in the knowledge economy.

“This round of awards will improve the research capacity of the Irish third-level sector and the international competitiveness of Irish university researchers.”
