AMONG the thousands of Irish travellers affected by the volcanic ash cloud that has swept across northern Europe were the McCarthy family from Youghal, Co Cork.

David, Za and their children Ben, 10, Ishiah, 7, and Ewan, 2, arrived at Cork airport early yesterday morning in anticipation of leaving for a “dream holiday” to Disneyland Paris.

But by 1.30pm – and having witnessed growing crowds of restless would-be passengers and rows of empty check-in desks – they quickly realised the dream holiday they had spent two years planning and saving for lay in tatters.
