Legal strategy meeting over Good Friday drink bid

LIMERICK publicans will meet today to decide on their legal strategy to get court permission to open on Good Friday for the big Munster v Leinster Magners League game at Thomond Park.

Legal strategy meeting over Good Friday drink bid

The members of the Licensed Vintners Federation of Ireland (LFI) will be briefed by their Limerick legal adviser, Gearoid McGann.

It is anticipated following the meeting the publicans will lodge an application at Limerick District Court for a special exemption for pubs within the city boundary to open on Good Friday from 6pm to midnight.

The game is due to kick off at 8.05pm. Under present law, all the bars within Thomond Park will be allowed serve drink to the 26,000 fans attending the game. Lawyer, Constance Cassidy SC, whose book on the pub laws is the accepted definitive work, maintains the pubs could be granted a local licence under the existing act as the game constitutes a special occasion.

However, Garda management are not convinced that this is the case and are expected to object to the publicans’ application.

The Limerick publicans will this afternoon meet at The Strand Hotel to decide on a plan of action.

Limerick Chamber of Commerce say that big games at Thomond Park are worth in excess of €10 million to the local economy.
