Those who were hospitalised included two women and one man, ranging in age from 82 to 90. All three, who were travelling in the same car, were taken to Cork University Hospital.

A female occupant was the most seriously injured. Her condition was described last night as “stable”.

The occupants of the other two cars were treated at the scene. They ranged in age from mid-20s to early 30s and included two men and one woman.

The accident took place on the main Whitegate to Midleton road at Whitewell Cross, near Cloyne, at approximately 3.45pm.

A garda spokesperson said the crash occurred following a collision between a van travelling on the main Whitegate to Midleton road and a car coming from the Cloyne direction onto the main road. These two vehicles collided and then struck a third car travelling from the direction of the Aghada GAA pitch.

The Whitegate to Midleton road was closed for a number of hours following the accident. Gardaí and fire brigade personnel attended the scene. Gardaí said four of those involved were from the East Cork area and two were from West Cork.
