Ballyvourney residents to block Cork-Killarney road

A COMMUNITY is to block a section of the Cork-Killarney road (N22) on Tuesday morning to highlight safety fears.

Villagers in Ballyvourney, Co Cork, say they have run out of patience over a long-running saga which has left their main street in a serious condition and created a major hazard.

In the summer of 2007, the road was dug up to facilitate the laying of sewerage and water pipes.

But locals say it was never properly finished and they are left with an “undulating surface.”

Muintir Bhaile Bhuirne chairman Brian Lane said the protest was decided at a recent meeting where many expressed concern and anger.

“It was noted that, despite numerous requests to the NRA (National Roads Authority) for remedial action to be taken, work had been postponed, commitments deferred and, more recently, requests for action had been ignored,” Mr Lane said. “It was agreed unanimously that the road poses a serious threat to public safety, up to and including the potential for fatalities.”

The group’s secretary, Anne Labrosse said the community association had asked senior NRA officials which contractor would undertake work on the road and when it would start: “As the NRA failed to respond satisfactorily we have no choice but to act now to prevent carnage in the future.”

The state of the road was highlighted at a Cork County Council meeting late last year by a number of councillors led by FF’s Cllr Aindrias Moynihan.
