CORK City Council is owed almost €20 million in commercial rates from businesses in the city, it has emerged.

Figures obtained by the Irish Examiner reveal that many businesses are struggling to pay rates in tough economic times.

So far this year, City Hall issued almost 1,800 legal notices against businesses, with a further 735 summonses for court issues and lodged 53 judgments with various sheriffs.
