Cigarette factory discovered after seizure of tobacco

CUSTOMS have detected the first illegal cigarette manufacturing factory following the seizure of eight tonnes of tobacco.

Reflecting the scale of the manufacturing operation, customs said the Monaghan haul was enough to make 12 million cigarettes, or 600,000 packs of 20.

Investigators said a sophisticated organised crime gang was behind the operation and are conducting investigations here and abroad.
