Anger over broken glass left on GAA pitch

PEOPLE who leave broken glass on a popular GAA pitch in north Kerry have come under fire.

Ballyheigue GAA pitch is used by adult and juvenile players and broken glass could cause serious injury to players, it was claimed yesterday.

Chairperson of North Kerry Sinn Féin, Risteárd O Fuaráin, said he found glass on the pitch during training sessions last week.

“On Wednesday, I found remnants of a beer bottle on the playing surface. On Saturday, I found remnants of a vodka bottle on the pitch. On Saturday morning, members of the club, who do fantastic work on a voluntary basis, were collecting a large quantity of alcohol bottles from the previous night’s party. This is a disgrace and I call on these people to have respect for this fantastic facility and regard for the safety of players, officials and supporters.”

Separately, new multi-purpose sports facilities have been opened at Rossbeigh Beach, just off the Ring of Kerry, costing €90,000.

As well as a children’s playground, facilities include courts for football, soccer, tennis and basketball. The project was mainly funded under the Leader programme and a site was provided by Kerry Co Council.
