A PROMOTIONS firm owned by legendary singer Joe Dolan has made a €3.8 million settlement with the taxman.

The late entertainer’s brother Ben, also a director of Monroe Mullingar Ltd, made a settlement of €279,542 – €115,565 in unpaid tax and €163,977 in penalties – for the under-declaration of income tax and& capital gains tax.

The settlement made by Monroe Mullingar Ltd comprised €1,763,925 in unpaid tax and penalties of €2,091,241 and arose because of the under-declaration of income tax, PAYE/PRSI and& VAT.

It was the biggest settlement published by the Revenue covering the 105 published settlements made covering the three-month period to March 31 this year.

Prominent businessman Joseph Clayton Love Jnr of Tanglewood, Currabinny, Co Cork, made a settlement of €1.4m – €530,000 in unpaid tax and €870,000 in penalties – in connection with under-declaration of income tax and a Revenue Ansbacher investigation.

Dentist Brian Mulrean of 40 Castle Court, Booters-town, Co Dublin, made the single biggest personal settlement at €1.8m – €771,033 in unpaid tax and penalties of €1,125,615. The case arose from underdeclaration of income tax, capital gains tax and& capital acquisitions tax and a Revenue offshore assets investigation case.

Revenue also revealed a blitz on the airline industry last year saw successful prosecutions against Aer Lingus, Ryanair, Aer Arann, Servis-air, SR Technics and Sky Handling Partners.

Aer Lingus was fined €10,500 on seven separate charges; Ryanair was fined €10,500 on six charges; Servisair Ireland was fined €7,500 on five charges; SR Technics was fined €3,000 on one charge; Aer Arann was fined €1,500 on one charge; and Sky Handling Partners was fined €1,500 on one charge.

Sligo Football Club was another of the high-profile settlements after being ordered to pay €55,400.

Other million-euro settlements included:

* Clothing wholesalers Bright Blade, Lansdowne Road, Dublin, hit with a bill for €3.5m for VAT, PAYE/PRSI and corporation tax following a Revenue audit.

* Fireplace and stone suppliers Christopher O’Neill, Ballyogan Road, Carrick-mines, Co Dublin, had to fork out €1m in corporation tax and VAT.

* Donegal butcher Bernard McCarron, from the Diamond, Raphoe, paid €1m owed in income tax and capital gains tax in the Single Premium Insurance and Offshore Assets probe.

Revenue said the 105 settlements were worth €32m, with nine exceeding €1m. Almost €14m was recovered from the Ansbacher, Bogus Non-Resident, Offshore Funds and Single Premium Insurance Products probes.
