Ryan Report delayed by vote of no confidence
The report, which detailed decades of abuse in institutions run by 18 religious orders, had been due for discussion tomorrow and Thursday. But the no-confidence motion, which begins today, will instead continue tomorrow, with the vote taken circa 5.30pm.
The Ryan Report will now be discussed on Thursday and Friday. As the Dáil ordinarily does not sit on a Friday, a special sitting of the House has been arranged from 10.30am to 1.30pm.
Labour criticised Fine Gael’s decision to table the motion, saying the Dáil’s focus this week should have been on the Ryan Report rather than a no-confidence motion which the Government would inevitably win.
“I would like the Ryan debate, if you like, not to be based around party political conflict,” Labour deputy leader Joan Burton said. “I think it’s just very important to focus on the content of that.”
