Extra powers for corporate crime watchdog

THE watchdog for corporate crime is to get new powers and more staff to bolster his expanded probe of the financial sector.

The Office of Director of Corporate Enforcement (ODCE) Paul Appleby will be strengthened under legislation that was approved by the cabinet yesterday.

The amendments were in line with recommendations by Mr Appleby to the Department of Enterprise in meetings around the time of raids on Anglo Irish Bank.
