City mayor confident of convictions in Geoghegan murder
“We asked about the murder investigation, and while they could not give us direct answers because the investigation is ongoing, they seemed quite happy the way the investigation was going and also with the support they were getting from the people of Limerick.
“From what they said, I would be confident that the people who carried out the savage murder of Shane Geoghegan will be arrested, tried and convicted. That was my own impression, coming away from the meeting,” said Mr Gilligan.
Accompanied by Cllr Kevin Kiely, chairman of the city’s joint policing authority, the mayor met with Chief Supt Gerry Mahon, Det Supt Jim Browne, Supt Frank O’Brien and Supt Ann Marie McMahon.
He said he was very pleased that the four senior officers had spent a considerable time in Limerick during their careers and knew the people creating problems in the city.
Mr Gilligan said: “I am very confident that the hard work put in place by former Chief Supt Willie Keane, now an assistant commissioner, will be continued.”
The two main suspects in the Shane Geoghegan murder have left the country and are believed to be in Amsterdam at present. They are both known members of the McCarthy Dundon gang. One is connected to a notorious Southill family, some of whose members are in jail for murder and rape.
Shane Geoghegan was captain of the Garryowen thirds team and when club teams line out this weekend and the rest of the season, the number 3 jersey will not be used as a mark of respect to Shane who wore that number as prop.
Shane Geoghegan was shot dead as he walked home at Kilteragh, Dooradoyle on November 9.
He was mistaken for a well-known drugs importer who moved into Kilteragh after his partner was approved by Limerick County Council to benefit from their affordable housing scheme.
