Ahern fast-tracks legislation in crime crackdown

THREE pieces of legislation intended to crack down on violent gangland crime and give more rights to victims will be in place next year, Justice Minister Dermot Ahern promised last night.

Mr Ahern has fast-tracked laws that will allow cases to be reopened after an acquittal is made as well as rules allowing the greater use of victim impact statements in court cases.

These measures will be contained in the Criminal Procedures Bill which Mr Ahern will bring to cabinet for approval in the coming weeks.
