Garda stations lack facilities to record interviews

GARDA stations are operating without basic audio recording equipment to tape interviews with suspects.

The essential technology is lacking in several rural stations, it emerged yesterday, and there are some stations where not even tape recorders are available.

An opposition TD raised concerns that gardaí questioning suspects may not be protected from allegations of wrongdoing by detainees because the equipment is not available to record statements.
