Bail rejected for frequent absconder

A MAN arrested in north Kerry on Thursday night on foot of a bench warrant issued in Cork two months ago has been remanded in custody.

Bail rejected for frequent absconder

John Walsh, 42, of Trieneragh, Duagh, Listowel, in Co Kerry, appeared before Kenmare District Court yesterday morning and spent last night in Cork Prison after the state strongly objected to bail.

Gardaí said they believed Walsh would abscond to England if he was released.

Tralee-based Detective Sergeant John Brennan told Judge James O’Connor that Walsh was formally charged with failing to appear at court number two at Cork District Court on September 23, 2008, having been remanded on continuing bail in July, contrary to Section 13 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. He was due to face a Section 3 assault causing harm charge.

Det Sgt Brennan said the defendant made no reply when charged.

Gardaí from Cork were in the court and Det Sgt Vincent O’Sullivan said gardaí had been looking for Walsh since he “vanished” on August 18. The court heard Walsh had a history of failing to turn up for court appearances.

Det Sgt O’Sullivan said the bench warrant issued in September was the third for Walsh.

Walsh told Judge O’Connor he had been undergoing treatment for alcohol and drug addiction problems.

Judge O’Connor remanded Walsh in custody to appear before Cork District Court next Wednesday.
