Homegrown TV show goes global in BBC deal

The popular series Trish’s Paris Kitchen, produced by RTÉ Cork, filmed in part in west Cork and screened for the first time this year, has just been sold worldwide.

The deal, which will net the state broadcaster hundreds of thousands of euro, will see the show screened on the BBC food network across Europe, Asia and beyond for several years.

Although Secret Sights and Corrigan Knows Food, also produced in Cork, have been sold abroad, this latest deal is the first time a show produced on Leeside has been sold to the BBC.

Belfast native Trish Deseine first went to Paris 20 years ago and fell in love with French food and style, and the French capital.

In her food series, she showed how anyone can cook in a French style with flair and confidence.

Although a lot of the programme was made in Paris, all the cookery elements were filmed in West Cork.

“We filmed all the cooking in two kitchens, one in Kinsale and one near Clonakilty,” series producer Peter Mulryan said.

“Our design team went to work on the kitchens installing French plugs, cookers and other appliances.

“We even put huge lights outside the windows for that French sunshine look.”

A new series of the food show starts tonight but work is already under way on a further series.

Trish’s Sunshine Kitchen will be shot mostly in the south of France with interior shots done in Fermoy, and Trish’s French Country Kitchen is due to be screened in Autumn 2009.

All have been pre-bought by the BBC.

Other high-profile shows produced by RTÉ in Cork include Nationwide, Corrigan, which is also filmed near Kinsale, and the children’s programme, Satitude, broadcast live for two hours on Saturday mornings.

“We will shortly be announcing details of a major history project which will air next year,” head of RTÉ Cork, Colm Crowley, said.

Secrets of the Stones — Decoding Ireland’s lost past, a major two-part series is one of the most ambitious and expensive TV programmes RTÉ has ever produced. It will also be the station’s first internally produced high definition programme.

The broadcaster employs a team of 50 plus programme makers, technicians and freelancers.

The new series of Trish’s Paris Kitchen starts tonight on RTÉ One at 7.30pm.
