Second Ryanair plane forced to make emergency landing

RYANAIR engineers are investigating the cause behind the airline’s second emergency landing — in just one week.

Second Ryanair plane forced to make emergency landing

A flight from Milan to Rome was diverted yesterday after a warning light in the cockpit suggested a problem with the plane’s landing gear.

Ryanair said the aircraft landed normally and engineers were examining the indicator light, which may have been faulty.

“The Captain of Ryanair flight FR9462 from Milan (Bergamo) to Rome (Ciampino) diverted to Rome (Fiumicino) as a safety precaution,” the airline said in a statement.

The warning light is designed to come on if the aircraft landing gear is not fully extended on approach to an airport.

“The aircraft undercarriage had extended and the aircraft landed normally at Fiumicino, where passengers were disembarked for a coach transfer to Rome,’ it added.

A spokesman for the airline said initial checks suggested the indicator light was faulty and will be replaced, allowing the aircraft to fly to the Ciampino base.

The budget carrier was forced into two other unscheduled landings this week.

On Monday a number of passengers on a flight from Bristol to Spain were treated in hospital after cabin pressure plummeted and the pilot landed in France.

Meanwhile, Italian airline, Alitalia is battling or its survival.

The carrier, which is losing €2 million a day, has sought court protection from its creditors, effectively declaring itself insolvent.

Flights will continue while the company undergoes radical changes including a planned breaking up of the airline with part of the business being sold to a foreign investor.

Profitable short-haul routes are to be separated into a new business, controlled by a consortium of Italian investors including budget airline Air One.

The airline has been kept in the air by a €300m state loan.

The airline industry has been experiencing serious problems due to soaring fuel costs and the credit crunch.

Alitalia was also damaged by strategic indecision and chronic industrial relations problems.
