Multitudes fail to materialise for Cork City’s hour of need

WITH a 3,795-strong crowd in place for last night’s match against Bray Wanderers, numbers were up somewhat, but it wasn’t the great show of allegiance a green politician and the Lord of the Dance had hoped for.

Multitudes fail to materialise for Cork City’s hour of need

With the club in examinership, Lord of the Dance star, Michael Flatley and a Green Party senator, urged their fans to turn up in droves at Turner’s Cross last night.

“At this time of difficulty, Cork City supporters need to help the club over this hurdle. Cork City FC has been an extremely successful club in sporting terms, it should be given every encouragement to achieve future success,” said Senator Boyle, who lives a hop, skip and a jump from the grounds.

When Michael Flatley also issued words of encouragement, everyone wondered if we were just offering verbal support.

Cork City FC must have thought their luck was in at last when they received a call from the Flatley estate.

Club promotions officer, Stephen Ryan said: “I was contacted this morning by one of Michael’s staff Niamh Sullivan, who told me that unfortunately Michael and his family were out of the country last evening but Michael, in his own words, wanted to let the people of Cork know that he was supportive of the team”.

In a direct statement to Cork City FC, Michael said: “Best of luck Friday night. Cork City is a great team and deserves all our support”.

In the meantime, the club is still actively seeking new investors to help pay off its mounting debts. Star player, Dave Mooney was sold to Reading last week for €400,000. Former chairman Brian Lennox, who sold Cork City to venture capital firm Arkaga in 2007, resigned as director a week ago.

CCFC is one of a number of League of Ireland clubs to experience severe financial difficulties this season, among them Galway United, Sligo Rovers and Cobh Ramblers.
