AN ancient Chinese theory that the number 8 is lucky didn’t totally hold out for the brave Irish in the Aga Khan Trophy which Britain won at the Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horse Show yesterday.

Ireland, represented by Denis Lynch (Nabab’s Son), Eddie Macken (Tedechine Sept), Jessica Kurten (Castle Forbes Libertina) and Cian O’Connor (Rancorrado) turned in a splendid performance to finish second and boost the country’s position in the Samsung Super League.

But the fact that the Irish didn’t win the trophy shattered the Chinese belief that the number 8 is lucky, as the team had actually jumped 8th of the eight teams on the 8th day of the 8th month in a ‘08 year.
