Hundreds attended the funeral of Jeremiah Carmody, 10, who was killed on Monday when he was hit by a van while crossing a road near a field where he helped tend cattle.

The accident happened near his home at Dirreen, Athea.

Jeremiah was with his father Roger and an older brother, also Roger, 12, when they went out to tend to animals.

Roger and Mary Carmody returned to Ireland from the US some years ago after they bought the farm.

Addressing mourners at the funeral Mass, Fr Larry Madden said Jeremiah was a very talented and enterprising boy, who, even at such a young age, was viewed in some envy and awe by his friends.

Fr Madden said: “We are parting with a real country boy at heart, happy in his home environment and who wanted to get stuck in and be involved in the various and many activities going on at home.

“He was very popular among his class mates at school. He was interested in sport and played football. He had a particular flair for art, where he displayed a high degree of talent.”

Fr Madden said they will not forget about his family, his friends and all that Jeremiah leaves.

The Carmodys have six other children, two boys and four girls.

On Wednesday hundreds attended the wake in the family home.

After requiem mass in St Bartholomew’s church the burial took place in Listowel.

A number of mourners travelled from the US for the funeral.

Many children from the local primary school which Jeremiah attended cried openly at the loss of the their friend.

His football jersey lay on the coffin and young members of the local soccer and GAA clubs formed a guard of honour for the cortege on its way to the local cemetery.
