Gardaí foil robbery by armed raiders
The uniformed officers confronted the three-man gang on Sunday night as they were in the middle of robbing an electronics store in Fairview, in north city Dublin.
They were arrested and a number of staff, who were tied up, were released.
“At about 10pm, three men entered a DVD rental electronic store, as staff were closing for the night,” said a Garda spokesman. “The raiders were armed with what was believed to be a handgun. They then tied up the staff of the shop and attempted to gain access to a safe.
“Gardaí responded to a call concerning this incident and made their way to the scene. The Garda members discovered the raiders on the premises and arrested all three.”
The spokesman confirmed gardaí were uniformed and unarmed: “There were no shots fired, and no injuries arising out of the incident.”
Three males arrested were all aged in their 20s.
They were taken to Whitehall, Fairview and Raheny Garda stations and held under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
Meanwhile, gardaí investigating an armed raid at an ATM machine in south Dublin last Thursday released three people on Sunday. A fourth was still being questioned yesterday. The robbery — in which two security men were held at gunpoint — took place at Nutgrove Shopping Centre in Rathfarnham.
