Enda Loughlin was before Cork Circuit Criminal Court where he faced three counts on the indictment.

He pleaded guilty to one count of corrupt acceptance of a gift by a person employed by the administration of the state, contrary to the Prevention of Corruption Acts of 1906 and 2001.

The particulars of the charge are as follows: “Enda Loughlin, on a date unknown between September 1, 2004, and September 30, 2004, at Barrack Street, Bantry, Co Cork, being a person employed by the public administration of the state, corruptly accepted as a gift €1,500 from Mazhar Ali Baig as an inducement to/a reward for, or otherwise on account of you doing an act/omission... process work permit applications in respect of Mohammad Habib Satti, Mohammad Nadeem, Mohammad Ali Tuqueer, Naveed Aslam and Muzxfar Abbas.”

Defence senior counsel Tom Creed applied to have sentencing in the case adjourned on the same bail conditions to allow time for the preparation of a probation report. He also applied for free legal aid to prepare a psychiatric report and for counselling. Mr Creed said Loughlin had been attending counselling for the past few months. The senior counsel said legal aid was necessary for the defence to get reports related to addiction and other matters.

Judge Con Murphy put sentencing back until November 12.
