An Post falls short as 25% of letters miss next-day target

JUST three-quarters of letters posted within Ireland last year were delivered the next day — 17% short of the target laid down by the communications regulator.

While delivery rates in Dublin improved in 2007, An Post did not fair as well in the regions.

ComReg revealed delivery speeds in Dublin improved by 6% to 77%, but in the other 25 counties, the performance improved by only 2%.

The figures are based on the annual survey of An Post’s quality of service carried out by TNS MRBI.

Alex Chisholm, ComReg’s commissioner, said the quality of the postal service here was not up to the standards of other countries.

“Much more work needs to be done by An Post to bring next day delivery rates up to the standard of best practice internationally, and they must build on this performance improvement in 2008,” Mr Chisholm said.

He said An Post had failed to make up significant ground in their quality of service performance over a prolonged period.

Mr Chisholm praised An Post’s performance in 2007.

“However, next day delivery has improved by just six percentage points over the past five years, since monitoring of quality of service commenced, and the annual result still remains well short of the target of 94%.”

In response, An Post chief executive Donal Connell said quality improvement was the company’s primary focus for 2008.

“It’s important to recognise that we have achieved this improvement whilst handling steadily increasing mail volumes — up approximately 5% in 2007. We are committed to achieving our 94% target,” he added.
