Probe into man’s death continues

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy began a postmortem examination on the body of Anthony Hennessy, 41, at Cork University Hospital yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí were still awaiting the results late last night.

The outcome will determine the course of their investigation.

Mr Hennessy, who was originally from Cushing Place in Farranree, but who was living in Gurranabraher, Cork, walked into the Mo Chuísle Bar off Blarney Street on the northside of the city just before midnight on Thursday.

The father of four daughters asked to be served, but was refused. He remained on the premises for several minutes before being asked to leave.

Gardaí were called as bar staff escorted him outside.

He collapsed as they were standing with him on the street and as gardaí arrived on the scene.

Gardaí contacted the emergency services immediately and they rushed to the scene.

They performed CPR before transferring Mr Hennessy by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where doctors continued to work on him.

Despite their attempts he was pronounced dead at about 1.30am.

Gardaí immediately launched an investigation and sealed off a section of road outside the pub.

They covered a portion of the road just outside the pub with tarpaulin to allow for a full forensic examination, which was carried out yesterday morning.

A team of about 12 gardaí carried out door-to-door enquiries and spoke to a number of witnesses.

CCTV footage from cameras in the area was also examined.
