Charges expected in Grant murder

LIMERICK gardaí expect to charge a man shortly in connection with the murder of a father of three.

Charges expected in Grant murder

The investigation into the gun attack which claimed the life of Gareth Grant is completed and a file is being finalised for the DPP.

Two men were arrested on Monday, bringing to 25 the number of arrests in the case. Both were held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and were released without charge. One man is aged 18 and the other is in his 20s.

This was the second time they were arrested and questioned about the murder.

Superintendent John Kerin, of Henry Street garda station, said they are in a position to send a file to the DPP.

Mr Grant, 25, was shot dead by a lone gunman near his home in St Ita’s Street, St Mary’s Park, in the early hours of October 8 last.

The main suspect is a teenager who lives nearby.

The gunman is suspected of carrying out the shooting on the orders of a feared local gang.

Meanwhile, in a separate inquiry, gardaí suspect a Limerick gang is responsible for two raids on bookmaker shops in Co Limerick.

The gang was interrupted by gardaí trying to break into the Newcastle West Boylesports outlet at 2.30am yesterday. They sped off and managed to evade gardaí after a high-speed chase.

On Monday, the same gang raided the Adare branch of Boylesports and pulled a safe from a wall.

It was found opened near Limerick. An undisclosed sum of money was taken.
