A HUGE overhaul of the driver testing system is to take place next year with applicants able to choose for the first time when they take their test.

The system will end the “queuing” ordeal for applicants who currently can only nominate the centre where they want to be tested but not the date or time — a weakness blamed for many cancellations.

“It will be just the same as booking a flight online,” said Road Safety Authority spokesman Brian Farrell. “If the slot is available, you’ll be able to pick it. You won’t be queued and left waiting to know when you’ll be called.”
