Malone named as UL chief

THE man charged with developing the country’s roads network was has been named the new chancellor of the University of Limerick.

Peter Malone has been appointed chancellor and chairman of the governing authority of UL for a five-year term.

Mr Malone has had a wide-ranging and distinguished career in business. He has chaired the National Roads Authority since 2002, and also holds a number of other positions including chairman of CBRE Gunne Property Group, chairman of Business Tourism Forum and chairman of the Dundalk Economic Development Group.

He is a member of the Government review body on higher remuneration in the public sector.

Mr Malone is a former chairman of Hibernian Group. In the earlier part of his career, he was managing director of Jurys Doyle Hotel Group following which he took up a position as non-executive director with the group until 2005.

Mr Malone has also held the positions of chairman of Board na Móna, director of CPL Recruitment and director of Ulster Bank Limited.

Speaking about the appointment announcement, Professor Don Barry, president of the University of Limerick, said: “I welcome the decision of the governing authority and know that the appointment of Peter Malone as our chancellor will allow us to draw on his extensive experience of leadership in public and private sector organisations to continue UL’s advancement as a pioneering and progressive force in Irish education.”
