Up to 15 pallets of spirits, which included bottles of Smirnoff vodka and Paddy, Jameson and Powers whiskey, were stolen from the Classic Drinks company in Little Island.

Details of the raid emerged yesterday when gardaí made an appeal for the public’s help in tracking down the perpetrators.

Detective Inspector Martin Dorney, who is leading the investigation, said that the robbery was likely to have happened between 2.30pm last Saturday and 8am on Monday.

“We don’t know how many people were involved in it, but it was probably a few. They probably used a lorry as we found tyre marks at the scene,” said Det Insp Dorney. “We have no doubt the drink was robbed for the Christmas market,” he said.

The senior garda appealed to anybody who saw anything suspicious at the warehouse at the OC Industrial Estate last weekend, to contact gardaí who have set up a special incident room at Cobh Garda Station.

Anybody with information is asked to contact (021) 4908530.

Meanwhile, it emerged yesterday gardaí are sending a file to the DPP in relation to the theft of €1.25 million worth of drinks from Nash’s Beverages.

Det Insp Dorney said that even though that company was based in Little Island he didn’t think that robbery was connected with the one at Classic Drinks, or the robbery of sports gear, perfume and computer equipment from the nearby Securispeed warehouse at Brooklodge East, Glanmire.

However, he said gardaí were convinced that whoever robbed the Classic Drinks company had to have some local knowledge.

He said a number of statements had been taken in relation to the €1.25m robbery at Nash’s Beverages, but that no arrests had yet been made.

Gardaí have recovered some of drink.

It is believed that the €1.25m haul was taken over a period of 18 months to two years and it only came to light recently due to an internal audit.

The stolen drink was mainly made up of beers and lagers.
