Mary’s emotional tour de force fails to cure underlying ailment
Sadly, despite an angry and at times rawly emotional performance, there was a similar lack of illumination from Mary Harney as to how the anguish created by the cancer misdiagnosis scandal was allowed to rip through so many women’s lives for so long.
Ms Harney unleashed all she had against the opposition benches in an extraordinary 24-minute masterclass in attack politics that saw her hold the Dáil in a strangle lock while she by turns lambasted opponents, ridiculed their motives and then pleaded for a bipartisan approach to cancer care — her voice occasionally breaking with the strain of her fury as she fought to claw back her credibility inch by inch.
