Jay Stansfield grabbed a late winner to fire Birmingham top of the Championship with a 2-1 win against 10-man Swansea.

Stansfield struck three minutes from time after a Christoph Klarer own goal had cancelled out his first-half opener for Birmingham.

Ryan Allsop saved Ross Stewart’s early Swansea penalty after the referee felt Jenson Seelt had been shoved over by Alex Cochrane from the first corner of the match. The referee intervened again when he sent off Marko Stamenic for a high challenge on Ethan Laird in the 26th minute.

Cardiff came from 4-1 down to snatch a dramatic 5-4 win against Burnley in a second successive goal-fest in the Welsh capital.

Cardiff had seen a 3-0 lead wiped out by West Ham to drop two points in midweek, but it was their turn to come from behind here as Burnley’s miserable season continued.

The visitors who opened the scoring when a hopeful punt forward from Lucas Pires allowed forward Andreas Hountondji to go through on goal and slide the ball past Nathan Trott.

Burnley doubled their lead 10 minutes later after great work on the left from Jaydon Banel. The ball came to Marcus Edwards on the edge of the box and he fired through a sea of bodies to beat Trott.

The hosts pulled one back before the break when Rubin Colwill’s goalbound effort bounced off Ollie Tanner and in but Kristian Bielik restored Burnley’s two-goal advantage before Alex Robertson diverted Aaron Ramsey’s cross into his own net to make it 4-1.

Yousef Salech – who had come off the bench less than two minutes before – began the comeback when he slotted home in the 65th minute and Republic of Ireland international Jack Moylan made it 4-3 from the penalty spot with 15 minutes to go.

Salech headed his second goal of the game to level the scores in the 82nd minute with Robertson curling in a 30-yard wonder goal to secure the most unlikely of wins four minutes in time added on.

Jack McGlynn and Ben Wilmot scored as Stoke hit back to beat Portsmouth 2-1 and maintain their impressive form.

Tyrese Shade put Portsmouth in front after six minutes with a lovely bending finish, but Stoke turned a tame first half around to make it five away wins in a row. McGlynn capitalised on goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid’s failure to hold on to a cross before Wilmot headed home a rebound.

“That is the first time we have won five on the bounce away from home since 1947,” said the Stoke manager, Mark Robins. “That just shows what an achievement it is. The players need to take stock of that and be proud of it. We can go into the international break satisfied and it gives us a lot to be proud of going forward.

“We weren’t us in the first half and we gave them a lead. To come back from that and perform like we did in the second half to get the two goals and win was really pleasing.” A magnificent display by Watford goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia denied Middlesbrough top spot as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road.

Despite a dominant performance, Middlesbrough drew a blank for the second time in four days while under-pressure Watford head coach Alessio Dionisi had Ravaglia to thank for a third consecutive clean sheet at home.

Scott Parker is still waiting for his first win as West Ham manager after a 2-1 defeat at spirited Blackburn.

West Ham dominated possession but ultimately paid for profligacy early in the second half. Andri Gudjohnsen headed in his 10th league goal of the season and Dapo Afolayan’s powerful strike doubled the Rovers advantage 19 minutes from the end.

Joel Piroe lashed in from close range to halve the deficit and Tomas Soucek missed a glorious injury time chance as West Ham suffered their first away defeat of the campaign.

Second-half goals from Isaac Price, Jayson Molumby and substitute Felix Horn Myhre gave West Brom a 3-0 win against Millwall at The Hawthorns.

Price broke the deadlock with a superb, curling effort six minutes after the break before setting up Myhre for the 89th-minute third goal, after Molumby scored 12 minutes from time. A deserved return to winning ways made it six matches unbeaten for James Morrison’s side, who have now taken 13 points from their last 18.

Lewis O’Brien’s first goal of the season earned Wrexham a 1-1 draw and prevented Wolves going top. Wolves have never won at Cae Ras but Adam Armstrong’s strike after 25 minutes suggested they might register a history-making victory. Instead, O’Brien equalised for Phil Parkinson’s side two minutes later though the visitors still extended their unbeaten run to six matches.

Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were in attendance for only this seventh league meeting between the sides in 102 years and first since 1988.

Parkinson said: “It’s always very uplifting for the people who work at the club, the staff and the players when Rob and Ryan come over. It is good to see their connection with the club, how much they care and their understanding of when people need a lift and bit of support. The crowd too is uplifted with the owners being in town.”

Bristol City fans turned on Michael Skubala as Norwich made it nine goals in successive away victories with a 5-0 win at Ashton Gate. Norwich took a 22nd-minute lead when Paris Maghoma picked up the ball 40 yards out and ran forward unchallenged before placing a low shot past Brad Collins from the left side of the box.

It was 2-0 in the 53rd minute, Jason Knight’s mistimed header inside his own penalty area directing the ball to Harry Darling who coolly nodded it over Collins’ despairing dive. Three minutes later Maghoma turned provider, pulling a low cross back for Andre Brooks to fire home a third. There were still 20 minutes left when substitute Jovon Makama turned in an Anthony Musaba cross.

Mathias Kvistgaarden added the fifth with an 80th-minute penalty after being pulled down by Lisav Eissat as home fans chanted ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’ in the direction of Skubala, whose team have already suffered five home league defeats this season.

Philippe Clement, the Norwich manager, said: “We are growing by the week. I am seeing boys becoming men, with clear signs of evolution from so many of our young players. That’s what we need if we are to get to where we want to be. We want to play attacking football, with goals coming from all over the pitch, not just from our attacking players. I am proud of the intensity, the discipline and the quality on the ball we are displaying. The players are hungry and full of desire.”

Glen Kamara’s late goal gave QPR a 2-1 win over Lincoln City at Loftus Road. Richard Kone’s 11th-minute header – his fifth goal in four matches – put the hosts ahead before Dom Jefferies’ equaliser. Rangers endured a largely frustrating second half, but their persistence was rewarded in the 80th minute when Kamara thumped in his first goal since joining the club on a season-long loan from Rennes during the summer.

Jordan Thompson’s stunning volley secured Graham Alexander’s first win as Preston manager as his team shocked Southampton 1-0 at Deepdale.

Thompson won the match with a ferocious strike from outside the box in the 33rd minute and Preston held out for a vital three points.

Substitute Matty Godden’s 79th-minute goal ended Charlton’s run of 11 league matches without victory as they defeated Sheffield United 2-1 at The Valley.

Millenic Alli’s first goal since his summer transfer from Luton put the hosts in front, but veteran Jordan Ayew levelled before the half-hour mark. Godden had only been on the pitch four minutes when he showed predatory instincts to hook in Alli’s cross at the near post and earn Charlton their first win since late August.

On Friday night, Derby’s manager, John Eustace, handed all the praise to his group of players after they came from behind to earn their first home victory of the season with a 3-1 win against Bolton.

Derby were heading for a third straight defeat when Rúben Rodrigues notched his second goal of the season to give the Bolton a half-time lead.

The home fans booed the players off and then back on to the field after the break, which clearly had an effect when Ryan Nyambe equalised with his first goal in more than 300 career appearances just 39 seconds after the break.

Jack Robinson put the hosts in front three minutes later before Rhian Brewster sealed a first win since September with his first of the season in stoppage time.

Eustace says a half-time team talk between the players helped shift the tide in the second period.

He said: “It’s not about me, it’s about the group of players and I’m so pleased for them. The players have worked their socks off without any reward and then last two games we let ourselves down … Things haven’t been ideal but the way the group spoke was very pleasing for me.”
