Bus strike set to continue

THE Dublin bus strike affecting 60,000 passengers in the capital will rumble on for at least another 24 hours until after the sides meet with the Labour Court once more.

Bus strike set to continue

The court contacted the sides yesterday and asked to meet with them again tomorrow. The five-day-old dispute has seen one worker suspended and 36 routes either cancelled or affected by a limited service.

Mick Faherty of the National Bus and Rail Workers’ Union said the workers would maintain their action until then, though there would be no escalation of the action.

“The Labour Court made it clear that if there was any escalation it would have no further role to play and we have informed the drivers of that condition,” he said.

The disruption to service has been in place since Monday at 5am when a female driver, a union member, was suspended for failing to operate the new 4a route from Dublin Bus’ Harristown depot. Following her suspension, an official picket began.

SIPTU said the Labour Court’s invitation to talks is a positive development.

“The fact that the court has had an opportunity to discuss the issues with both sides and feels it can continue to play a useful role is hopeful,” said branch organiser Willie Noone.
