Charity is an uphill struggle
The new €3.8 million palliative care unit at Kerry General Hospital, in Tralee, will benefit from their efforts.
Marie Gallagher, Currow; Sile Kerley, Castleisland, and Marguerite Lyons, Ballymacelligott, scaled the mountains as part of the Red Dress Challenge.
Once they reached the summit of each mountain, they changed into high heels and sexy, red evening numbers — always in the freezing cold.
The main motivator of the challenge was former world champion mountain runner John Lenihan, from Ballymacelligott.
The girls, also known as the John Lenihan Scamblers, and their back-up teams all travelled to Ben Nevis, Scotland; Snowdon, Wales; Scafell, England, and Carrantuohill, in Co Kerry, at their own expense.
They are currently collecting funds for the recently opened Tralee palliative care centre.
The Kerry Hospice Foundation raised €3m for the centre, with the balance of €800,000 being provided by the Health Service Executive.
There are ambitious plans for another phase of expansion at the centre.
