Special lunch to raise funds for €1m care centre

A €1 MILLION refurbishment of an Alzheimer and care for the elderly centre in Cork is due to be completed next March and a special fundraiser is being held to defray the cost.

Special lunch to raise funds for €1m care centre

Details of the lunch were announced yesterday by the St Luke’s Home Corporate Fundraising Committee at a function in the Irish Examiner’s offices at Lapp’s Quay.

Its 30-unit Alzheimer centre in Mahon is only one of a handful of such centres in the country and its care of patients has been highly acclaimed.

In addition, the organisation has a large centre providing care for the elderly on the same campus, where it caters for about 120 people.

Running costs for the centres are estimated at €7m annually and while most of the financial burden is met by the HSE, fundraising is also needed.

Committee chairman Tim O’Sullivan said people were proud of the excellent care provided in St Luke’s and he was sure the event would be generously supported.

The fundraising lunch will be held on October 19 at Maryborough House Hotel, where guest speaker will be University College Cork president Dr Michael Murphy.

It is hoped that more than 300 people will attend and the cost is €600 per table of 10.

Tickets are selling fast and anybody wishing to purchase one should contact Joan Jeffery at 021-4359444.

The main sponsor for the event is the Bowen Construction Group.

Speaking at the Irish Examiner launch, Ted Crosbie, who is one of the main members of the St Luke’s fundraising committee, said the organisation had gone from strength to strength over the years.

“I have the greatest admiration for the place. It was formed by a combination of Victorian charity and necessity,” said Mr Crosbie.

St Luke’s Home chief executive David O’Brien said that the organisation was continually liaising with the HSE to improve and enhance its care facilities.

He said that on average €1 million had to be raised locally each year and several events were organised such as golf classics and flag days.

Mr O’Brien also paid tribute to a large number of support groups which held events on behalf of the organisation.
