DPP to get file on prison officers

GARDAÍ investigating an alleged drug-smuggling operation inside the country’s only maximum security prison are to send a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The file relates to two prison officers arrested as part of a garda search operation last Friday. The officers, based at Portlaoise Prison, were allegedly caught with small amounts of drugs in their homes.

Detectives are submitting a file on the two prison officers to the DPP. It is understood that while gardaí believe they may have enough evidence to warrant a prosecution for drug possession, it is unclear if the evidence is enough for a prosecution on supply.
