Gardaí investigate sex assault claims

GARDAÍ are investigating claims that a woman was sexually assaulted in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The woman was discovered in a distressed state by a motorist driving along a relatively unpopulated part of west Dublin.

The woman flagged down the car and told the man that she had been assaulted. The man immediately contacted the gardaí, who received the alert at about 4.30am and dispatched a unit to Baldonnell Road.

The location is a mainly industrial area with few housing estates in the immediate area. The scene was immediately sealed off and the road closed for a technical examination.

It is understood that the woman did not sustain any physical injuries in the attack. She was brought to Clondalkin Garda Station, where she made a formal complaint.

The Baldonnell Road from St Francis’s football pitch to the Baldonnell Industrial Estate was closed for a time while the forensic examination took place.

The road, however, was reopened within a relatively short period.

There were few details on the incident yesterday, but it appears that the woman may have been in a car with her alleged attackers.

It is not clear whether she was removed from the car or somehow made her own escape.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that officers were investigating an alleged sexual assault in the area and that inquiries were ongoing.

No arrests have been made yet. No particular appeal for information has been issued.

Clondalkin Garda Station can be contacted on 01-6667600.
