More turbulence as Ó Cuív adds voice to opposition

THE screw tightened on Aer Lingus yesterday over its proposed Shannon/Heathrow service shutdown with a second senior Cabinet minister adding his voice to the growing opposition.

More turbulence as Ó Cuív adds voice to opposition

Minister for Rural Affairs Eamon Ó Cuív said he would pledge to work with his colleagues within Fianna Fáil to “ensure these recent reversals are overcome”.

Mr Ó Cuív’s views were contained in a letter read to the meeting of FF public representatives in Shannon on Wednesday night.

It stated: “I am deeply dismayed by the recent decision of Aer Lingus in relation to Shannon airport and very concerned at the possible knock-on consequences. The decision, along with the decision from An Bord Pleanála in relation to the location of the headquarters of my department to Knock Airport, are a blow to the clear Government objective of balanced regional development.

“I will work with my colleagues within Fianna Fáil to ensure these reverses are overcome. I would appreciate meeting with local FF representatives to discuss a way forward.”

Junior Minister Tony Killeen, who helped organise Wednesday’s meeting, has come out in support of a reversal of the Aer Lingus decision.

Meanwhile, a group of FF senators have indicated they will table a motion at the party’s annual “think-in” calling on the Government to reverse the decision.

The think-in will be held at Druid’s Glen on September 17 and 18.
