Gormley tipped to win leadership

THE new leader of the Green Party will be announced this evening, with the Minister for Environment and a former MEP vying for the pivotal position.

A total of 1,200 ballot cards were issued last week, but yesterday evening only 45% were returned before today’s deadline of noon.

The party chairman and Environment Minister John Gormley and former MEP Patricia McKenna received the required 50 nominations to contest the position held by Trevor Sargent who is standing down as party leader.
