A youth wearing a hoodie produced an automatic handgun as he walked past the residence of the late Noel Campion at Pineview Gardens, Moyross. He fired a volley of shots at about 3pm.

Superintendent John Kerin said: “We believe about seven shots were fired and they did not hit anything. It seems like an act of bravado.”

The same house was badly damaged of June 24 when a firebomb was thrown at it.

That attack happened after wide-scale Garda searches in the area led to the discovery of guns.

Mr Campion, 35, was shot dead on April 26 while he was riding pillion on a motorbike.

A lone gunman opened fire on him as the bike slowed at a junction at High Road, Thomondgate.

The gunman had been waiting in a public phone box near the scene of the shooting, which happened at about 10.30am.

Mr Campion may have discarded his bullet-proof vest that morning due to the very warm weather. He died at the scene.

Gardaí suspect he was targeted by the McCarthy Dundon gang in reprisal for the murder of “Fat Frankie” Ryan in Moyross on September 17 last.

In the meantime, his brother Gary Campion was charged with the murder of 21-year-old Mr Ryan, who was closely linked to the McCarthy Dundon gang. Mr Ryan was shot in the head as he sat in his parked car at Pineview Gardens.

An associate who was with him at the time has been questioned by gardaí.

Gary Campion has also been charged with others with the murder of night club security man Brian Fitzgerald.
