Judge Mahon passed sentence on Mr Ahern anyway, and it was one of the most sarcastic sentences his honour has yet uttered.

“We are not allowed to use physical torture on witnesses to find out if indeed they did disclose material,” he despaired, wondering aloud what more he was expected to do to placate the tetchy taoiseach as his eyes glanced skywards.
