Gang posing as election canvassers in daylight robbery spree

A GANG of roaming criminals are using the election to carry out daytime raids pretending to be canvassers.

Up to 18 houses in the Askeaton and Newcastle West Garda districts have been robbed since the election was called.

A Garda spokesman said: “They call to a house and ring the door bell, if nobody answers they enter the house by forcing a door or window. They are being mistaken for election canvassers.” The gang usually target money and jewellery.
