Polish man remanded in connection with death

A POLISH national appeared yesterday before a special sitting of Limerick District Court in connection with the death of a fellow countryman on Easter Monday.

Polish man remanded in connection with death

Waldemar Mateja, aged 27, with an address at 49 Cois Ghruda, Castletroy, was charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Dariusz Miswkowski, contrary to Section 4 of the Non-fatal Offences Against the State Act at 19 Hawthorns, Brierfield, Castletroy.

Detective Garda Ivan Muldoon told the court that, when charged, the accused replied “no”.

Detective Inspector Declan Mulcahy objected to bail saying the accused was a non-national who had no ties to this jurisdiction. The officer said he believed that, if given bail, there was a fear factor regarding the intimidation of witnesses.

John Herbert, solicitor for Mateja, said he was not applying for bail and was reserving his position regarding bail.

Judge Tom O’Donnell remanded Mateja to the same court on April 18.
