A CHINESE mother was happily reunited with her toddler yesterday as gardaí in Cork were preparing to send the wandering boy to a foster family.

Mother reunited with son after boy found on street

Gardaí brought the three-year-old boy to the Bridewell station in the city centre after he was spotted lost along a busy Patrick Street in the middle of the afternoon.

The boy’s mother had little spoken English and did not know where to turn when she noticed her child was missing.

Superintendent Mick Finn said that despite their best efforts gardaí had difficulty finding out who the boy’s mother was.

He was being sent to be cared for by a foster family when his mother came forward.

“Happily the young man has been reunited with his mother. It appears she got separated from him in town yesterday and did not know where to go to get help,” he said.

The woman has been living in Cork for some time and went searching for a friend who spoke English.

Shortly before 7pm she approached the gardaí and was brought to the Bridewell station.

Supt Finn said that it was a very traumatic time for both mother and child, but they were happily back in each others’ company last night.
