Write stuff: media stars of the future scoop top awards
Last night 25 students from colleges across Ireland received their prizes in 27 categories taking in travel writing, website design and journalism.
The awards ceremony in Tripod club on Dublin’s Harcourt Street was attended by more than 900 people.
The Irish Examiner-sponsored journalist of the year, David Molloy, collected his prize for articles he wrote for the college paper Trinity News.
“I was always interested in a career in journalism so I was keen to get involved. I remember it was a pretty good feeling the first time about something I had wrote,” he said
David, a second year student of English and philosophy in Trinity college, is 20-years-old and from Clontarf.
The articles he submitted included a piece breaking the news that voter details had gone missing — making many Trinity students ineligible to vote in the Seanad elections.
There were around 800 entrants for the awards.
Its managing director, Colman Byrne, said the standard and level of interest in the various categories shows the constant state of change experienced within the media industry.
The title sponsor for this year’s event is the 3 mobile phone network.
Mr Coleman said the support the event gets from the various strands of media makes it an exciting event for students to pitch their talents while having the liberty to explore a wide range of pursuits.
