NEW cars may be much safer than older models in the event of a crash … but only for those driving them.

New cars more dangerous for road users

Research on the safety of modern vehicles has shown they are more dangerous for other road users as their additional weight, height and bulk are more likely to cause death and serious injury in the event of a collision.

A new study by the UK Transport Research Laboratory (TRC) has found that drivers involved in a crash with cars registered from 2000 to 2003 are 46% more likely to be killed in accidents that those hit by vehicles registered from 1988-1991.
