Roads claim three more lives in separate incidents
At 1pm yesterday one of Ireland’s oldest General Practitioners Dr James Moloney of Friar’s Street in Thurles lost his life in accident at Littleton, Co Tipperary.
Last night 91-year-old Dr Moloney Snr, who ran a practice in Thurles, was described by his neighbours as a gentleman who was known and loved by the entire community.
Dr Moloney had run a practice in the town for a long number of years.
He lost his life after the jeep he was driving collided with a truck on the main Dublin to Cork road at Ballymooreen, Littleton.
Dr Moloney was pronounced dead at the scene and his front seat passenger was taken to Nenagh General Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
Six hours earlier a similar accident claimed the life of a 74-year-old woman at Carnmore West in Co Galway.
At 7am the jeep she was driving struck an articulated truck along a busy stretch of road.
She was pronounced dead at the scene and Gardaí closed off the road until the evening time to conduct a full technical examination.
Last night the Garda press office said they would not be releasing her name until all of her family had been contacted.
Meanwhile, Gardaí have said they are investigating all aspects of the incident in which a boy died in Co Kerry, on Wednesday night.
It is understood the 14-year-old fell from the bonnet of a car at Dysert, Lixnaw, sustaining fatal injuries.
He was admitted to Kerry General Hospital, Tralee, at about 7.30pm, but efforts to revive him failed and he died two hours later.
Gardaí said it was an unfortunate accident and the boy’s death is not being treated as suspicious.
Assistant State pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster conducted a post-mortem examination at the hospital, yesterday.
The accident occurred on a country road close to the home of the boy’s relatives.
His name will not be released until his family have given the gardaí permission to do so.
Gardaí in Thurles have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the crash at Littleton to contact them at 0504 25100 or on the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111.
