Liquor worth €70,000 stolen from port

GARDAÍ are investigating the theft of a container and almost €70,000 worth of Irish Knights Cream Liquor from Dublin Port.

Liquor worth €70,000 stolen from port

The robbery is thought to be the first major theft in the port for around two years.

Prior to that, Dublin Port had been plagued by robberies, many of which were conducted by leading members of the Provisional IRA and criminal associates.

Many of the IRA members were subsequently kicked out of the organisation, but some carried on as “ordinary” criminals.

Garda sources last night said it was too early to say whether people from the old criminal crews carried out the latest robbery.

“We don’t really know who might be behind it. It is possible, the same type of criminals did it, but it’s too early to say,” said one source.

He said officers were going through CCTV cameras in Dublin Port and access roads in a bid to piece together the movement of the trailer and any other suspicious activity.

The container and its contents were stolen from Montgomery’s transport yard at Bond Road between 7.30am on Friday February 9 and 2pm on Saturday February 10.

The Montgomery trailer is described as a 45-foot sky blue container with curtains on the side. The front head and the rear doors of the trailer are white in colour with a Montgomery logo and “Montgomery” printed in red lettering on both sides.

The trailer also bears the identification number TL 45214 E on the front head and rear doors.

A garda spokesman the Irish Knights Cream Liquor load had an estimated value at €66,000.

He said the liquor was destined for the Scottish market. He said the only bottles of the liquor sold in Ireland have a shamrock on the neck of the bottle. The bottles stolen have no such shamrock on them.

“Anyone who may have any information in relation to the theft itself or any individual or retailer who may be offered any of these bottles are asked to contact Gardaí at Store Street on 01 6668000, the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station,” said the spokesman.
