Men injured in separate stabbing incidents

GARDAÍ found a young man in a pool of blood yesterday after he was stabbed several times following a domestic dispute in a quiet Cavan housing estate.

During the early hours of yesterday morning, the 20-year-old was repeatedly stabbed in the chest after a fight is believed to have broken out between people gathered in a house at the Aughnaskerry estate near the town.

Gardaí were called to the semi-detached home and the victim was rushed to Cavan General Hospital. Detectives were yesterday questioning occupants of the house as well as neighbours about the incident. The victim was later transferred to the Mater hospital in Dublin, were he underwent surgery. He remained in intensive care last night and his condition was described as critical.

A 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene and questioned at Cavan Garda Station and gardaí were last night granted a further 12 hours to question the man.

Local Garda Superintendent Fergus Healy said: “On arrival gardaí found a man, lying outside the premises, who had received multiple stab wounds to the chest.

“The injuries are fairly extensive. It was a gathering at the house in the estate, that’s all we know, and an incident happened that led to one of the people being stabbed.”

The victim was believed to be out on bail, signing on regularly at the local garda station.

One neighbour said she was shocked by the incident. “This is meant to be a quiet area,” said Theresa Smith.

Meanwhile, another man was stabbed when a row broke out in south Dublin yesterday afternoon.

Just after midday, an argument broke out on George’s Street in Dun Laoghaire between three men.

One man in his 30s was stabbed and was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital, where his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Garda sources said two of the men were involved in drugs and were known to them.
