Cruz and Winslet vie for top gong at Irish awards

HOLLYWOOD celebrities Penelope Cruz and Kate Winslet head the nominations for the glitzy Irish Film and Television Awards.

The stars of Vanilla Sky and Titanic will be up against Eva Green and Helen Mirren for the Pantene Best International Actress Award at the event being held on February 9.

The public will be casting their votes on who should be given the award to celebrate the top female talent in the film industry.

Cruz was nominated for her role in Volver, Green for the box office hit Casino Royale, Helen Mirren for starring as Elizabeth II in The Queen and Kate Winslet was chosen for The Holiday.

Áine Moriarty, chief executive of the fourth Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs), said: “I want to congratulate these four hugely talented actors for their work in these films. I am also truly delighted to welcome back Pantene as our Awards Partner in 2007.”

Voting for the People’s Choice Awards remains open until midnight on Sunday, January 28, on the website www.ifta.ie.

The award winners will be announced at the ceremony on Friday, February 9, which will be broadcast on RTÉ One on Saturday, February 10. Past winners of the International Actress Award include Keira Knightley for her roles in King Arthur and Pirates of the Caribbean and Gillian Anderson for The Mighty Celt.

Hollywood starlet Mischa Barton brought a touch of Californian glamour to thelast celebration of the Irish film industry in November 2005 at which some of the biggest names in the business were honoured.

At the last event, veteran actor David Kelly was given the Lifetime Achievement Award. The performer, who played the comical builder Reilly in Fawlty Towers and recently starred as Grandpa Joe in Tim Burton’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, was honoured for his career spanning six decades.

The event in Dublin’s RDS was attended by award veterans Sinéad Cusack, Oscar-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave, Andrea Corr, Eva Birthistle, Renee Weldon, Gráinne Seoige, former Miss World Rosanna Davison and Caprice.

Irish actor Liam Neeson scooped the Best Actor award for Kinsey, while Perry Ogden’s film Pavee Lackeen, which portrays the life of a young Traveller girl, scooped Best Film.

Television series Pure Mule picked up five accolades and director Terry George won the Best Director award with Hotel Rwanda.
